Description
Running along the dorsum of a male foot, the dorsalis pedis artery continues distally from the anterior tibial artery and gives off the arcuate artery across the bases of the metatarsals. From this dorsal arch, the dorsalis metatarsal arteries course anteriorly in the second through fourth intermetatarsal spaces, lying superficial to the dorsal interossei and deep to the dorsal venous network. Distally, each vessel approaches the metatarsophalangeal joints and divides into dorsal digital branches toward adjacent toes. Small arterioles and accompanying veins track alongside the named arteries. Clean topology. This dorsal arterial pattern matters when you need surface oriented landmarks for pedal perfusion, because the dorsalis pedis pulse is palpated lateral to the tendon of extensor hallucis longus and can be diminished in peripheral arterial disease, diabetes related vasculopathy, or acute limb ischemia.
