Description
Plantar anatomy is presented from the sole, with the deep plantar arterial arch coursing transversely across the bases of the metatarsals and giving rise to the plantar metatarsal arteries that run distally in the intermetatarsal spaces toward the toes. Each vessel tracks inferior to the metatarsal shafts and adjacent to the plantar interossei, then approaches the level of the metatarsophalangeal joints where it typically contributes to the plantar digital arteries. Metatarsals and phalanges are rendered as bony landmarks, keeping proximal tarsometatarsal and distal MTP relationships clear. Arteries appear in red, with accompanying venous channels in blue. Clinically, this plantar perspective clarifies why the forefoot’s arterial supply remains well protected yet susceptible at predictable chokepoints, including the distal deep arch and the metatarsal heads where footwear pressure, callus formation, or deformity can compromise perfusion. Diabetic foot ulcer evaluation often hinges on understanding which angiosome is at risk, and the plantar metatarsal and digital branches explain why ischemic changes may localize to specific plantar toe pads.
