Description
Seen from the dorsum of a male foot, the dorsal pedis artery continues distally across the talus and navicular region, giving rise to the arcuate artery and dorsal metatarsal arteries that run anteriorly over the metatarsals. From each dorsal metatarsal artery, dorsal digital arteries extend toward the toes, coursing along the dorsolateral and dorsomedial margins of the phalanges toward the nail beds. Superficial dorsal veins (in blue) accompany this network, converging proximally toward the dorsal venous arch, with tributaries tracking between the metatarsal heads and along the extensor tendon corridors. Fine vessels matter here. Dorsal toe perfusion is a frequent bedside question in peripheral arterial disease, and the dorsal view places the dorsalis pedis pulse and its distal branches in the same field as the digital runoff you assess when a toe looks ischemic or fails to heal. This arrangement also maps directly onto common incisions and flap planning on the dorsum of the foot, where preserving dorsal metatarsal and dorsal digital arteries helps maintain vascularity to skin and nail bed, and inadvertent injury can compromise distal perfusion. For educators, the dorsum is where students can reconcile palpable landmarks with a named arterial tree. Use this plate for gross anatomy and lower limb vascular teaching, podiatry and orthopaedic surgery courseware, or vascular surgery and wound-care publications discussing toe ischemia, diabetic ulcer risk, and postoperative flap monitoring on the dorsal forefoot. It also supports patient-facing diagrams when explaining dorsalis pedis pulse checks and digital perfusion findings. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
