Description
Framed from the anterior thorax of an adult male, the heart sits centrally behind the sternum with the ascending aorta rising superiorly before continuing into the aortic arch and descending thoracic aorta. Right and left pulmonary arteries course laterally from the pulmonary trunk toward their respective hila, while pulmonary veins return medially to the left atrium. Superior to the cardiac silhouette, the superior vena cava descends on the patient’s right, and paired brachiocephalic veins converge toward it. Arteries appear in red and veins in blue, with smaller arteriolar and venular branches suggested as they fan into the chest wall and mediastinum. Anterior vascular anatomy of the chest is the map for rapid orientation in both imaging and procedures. Catheter and lead placement often traverses the subclavian vein into the brachiocephalic vein and superior vena cava, so appreciating their anterior relationships helps explain common pitfalls such as inadvertent arterial puncture or malposition. The pulmonary outflow tract also matters. Enlargement of the main pulmonary artery in pulmonary hypertension, or prominent aortic contours in aneurysm and dissection, are frequently first appreciated on frontal chest radiography and then characterized on CT angiography. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and cardiopulmonary modules to anchor the distinction between pulmonary and systemic circulation, and in clinical skills teaching for central venous access and thoracic line placement.
