Description
Running inferior to the clavicle, the subclavian artery continues as the axillary artery at the lateral border of the first rib, with the axillary vein positioned anteromedial to it as both course through the deltopectoral region toward the proximal arm. Anterior branches expected in this perspective include the thoracoacromial trunk with pectoral, deltoid, acromial, and clavicular branches spreading superiorly and laterally, plus the lateral thoracic vessels descending along the lateral chest wall near serratus anterior. Posteriorly destined but often partially visible from the front, the subscapular system and the circumflex humeral arteries sweep around the surgical neck of the humerus, forming an arterial ring deep to deltoid. Depth cues matter here. For teaching and for procedures, an anterior map of shoulder vasculature clarifies where arteries and veins sit relative to common surface landmarks, the clavicle, and the humeral head, and it explains why bleeding patterns differ between deltopectoral and axillary exposures. This is the orientation used when discussing axillary artery injury after anterior shoulder dislocation or proximal humeral fracture, and when planning catheter or stent delivery via the subclavian-axillary axis. It also supports interpretation of angiographic and fluoroscopic (x-ray) projections where overlapping vessels can obscure the origin of the thoracoacromial or circumflex humeral branches.
