Description
Framed from the anterior aspect of a male head, neck, and upper thorax, the composition places intact facial skin superiorly while the cervical integument is treated as a superficial envelope over the deeper muscular planes. Sternocleidomastoid forms the dominant paired columns along the anterolateral neck, running inferomedially to the manubrium and medial clavicle from the mastoid region, with the scalene group positioned deep and slightly posterior to it along the lateral cervical spine and first rib. Near the midline, the suprahyoid and infrahyoid strap muscles relate to the hyoid bone and laryngeal framework, and the prevertebral muscle mass (longus capitis and longus colli) lies deepest, directly anterior to the cervical vertebral bodies. Pectoralis major occupies the superior anterior chest wall inferior to the clavicles. Anterior neck layering matters because small shifts in depth change what you can safely access. The relationship of the anterior and middle scalene muscles to the interscalene groove, where the brachial plexus trunks and subclavian artery course toward the thoracic outlet while the subclavian vein remains anterior to anterior scalene, is the anatomy behind interscalene nerve blocks, central line complications, and thoracic outlet syndrome from scalene hypertrophy or fibrous bands. Prevertebral muscles and their fascia also define the deep neck spaces, so infections can track along these planes to the retropharyngeal region and even into the superior mediastinum.
