Description

Anterior anatomy of the male face and neck is presented with the platysma forming a thin superficial muscular sheet over the anterolateral neck and the paired sternocleidomastoid muscles running obliquely from the mastoid region inferomedially toward the manubrium and clavicle. Deep neck fascia is represented as connective tissue planes investing these muscles and organizing the midline visceral compartment around the pharynx and laryngeal region, with the carotid sheath positioned lateral to the pharynx and medial to sternocleidomastoid on each side. Superiorly, facial musculature including frontalis, orbicularis oculi, zygomaticus major and minor, orbicularis oris, and masseter provides surface landmarks that relate to the course of fascial layers at the mandibular margin and parotidomasseteric region. Spatial relationships are clear. Midline visceral fascia, lateral neurovascular fascia. Fascial anatomy in the anterior neck matters because these planes dictate how infection, hemorrhage, and air track between compartments, and they define safe surgical corridors. The carotid sheath, enclosing the common and internal carotid arteries, internal jugular vein, and vagus nerve, becomes a practical landmark during anterior cervical procedures and neck dissections, where inadvertent entry into the wrong fascial plane can expose the ansa cervicalis, sympathetic chain, or lead to vascular injury. Retropharyngeal and “danger space” concepts also start here, with deep neck space infections spreading inferiorly toward the mediastinum along fascia rather than through muscle. Use this illustration for gross anatomy and head and neck modules when teaching cervical compartments, the carotid triangle, and the relationship of platysma and investing fascia to surgical skin incisions.
