Description
Arising from the thoracoacromial trunk deep to pectoralis major, the deltoid branch courses laterally and inferiorly within the deltopectoral groove between the clavicular head of pectoralis major medially and the anterior border of deltoid laterally. From an anterior shoulder perspective, it runs toward the deltoid muscle belly and proximal humerus, accompanied by venous tributaries that track the same fascial interval before draining toward the axillary system. Clavicle and acromial region landmarks frame the superior extent of the vascular field. A clean surface corridor. Surgeons and trainees care about this vessel because the deltopectoral approach uses the groove as a dependable interval for exposure of the proximal humerus and anterior shoulder, and the deltoid branch can become the first significant bleeder when the cephalic vein and surrounding fascia are mobilized. In shoulder trauma and arthroplasty workups, appreciating its relationship to the deltoid and pectoralis major helps explain hematoma patterns and guides safe retraction, while also reinforcing the collateral pathways around the shoulder girdle that matter when axillary flow is compromised.
