Description
Arising from the right ventricle, the pulmonary trunk ascends anterior to the left atrium and then bifurcates into the right and left pulmonary arteries just inferior to the aortic arch. From an anterior perspective, the pulmonary valve region sits centrally at the base of the trunk, while the left pulmonary artery courses horizontally toward the left hilum and the right pulmonary artery passes toward the right, running posterior to the ascending aorta and superior vena cava on its way to the right lung. Coronary arteries and cardiac veins trace the anterior surfaces of the ventricles, providing landmarks against the conus arteriosus and the anterior interventricular sulcus. That bifurcation is a key teaching point because it anchors the great vessel anatomy used in echocardiography and CT angiography when sorting the pulmonary outflow tract from the ascending aorta. Clinically, this is the segment evaluated in pulmonary embolism and pulmonary hypertension, and it is also where congenital variants such as a dilated main pulmonary artery, branch pulmonary artery stenosis, or a patent ductus arteriosus connection near the left pulmonary artery are discussed.
