Description
Running along the anterior compartment of the leg, the anterior tibial artery is shown after passing through the proximal opening in the interosseous membrane, then descending on the anterior surface of the tibia toward the ankle. In this anterior view of both lower limbs, the vessel tracks inferiorly between tibialis anterior and extensor hallucis longus, accompanied by venae comitantes, and continues distally to become the dorsalis pedis artery across the ankle region. Proximally, the popliteal artery and its bifurcation into anterior tibial and posterior tibial systems are implied by the vascular layout in the popliteal fossa and proximal calf. Red arteries and blue veins are rendered bilaterally from thigh to foot with smaller arteriolar branches tapering toward the dorsum of the foot. Clinical teaching tends to isolate the anterior tibial artery, but its relationship to palpable landmarks is what makes it memorable: as dorsalis pedis, the pulse is assessed lateral to the extensor hallucis longus tendon and can be diminished in peripheral arterial disease. Trauma and compartment syndrome are also tied to this course, because the vessel and deep fibular (peroneal) nerve sit within a tight fascial space in the anterior leg where swelling can threaten perfusion and dorsiflexion. Surgeons use this anatomy when planning distal bypass targets, flap perfusion, and endovascular access for tibial revascularization. Vascular anatomy instructors can drop this artwork into lower limb modules to contrast deep arterial pathways with the more superficial venous patterning and to reinforce right left symmetry in the male adult leg.
