Description

Positioned as a palmar (anterior) view just deep to the skin, the hypothenar eminence is opened to expose the flexor digiti minimi brevis along the ulnar border of the hand, running distal from the region of the hook of hamate and flexor retinaculum toward the base of the proximal phalanx of the little finger. Medial to the central palmar aponeurosis, the muscle belly sits superficial to the 5th metacarpal and adjacent to the abductor digiti minimi, with the opponens digiti minimi expected to lie deeper against the metacarpal shaft. Crossing the wrist proximally, the flexor retinaculum and nearby synovial sheaths frame the course of long flexor tendons into the digits, while short palmar ligaments and fibrous septa partition the superficial compartments. Flexor digiti minimi brevis is a small muscle, but it becomes a decisive landmark when you are sorting out ulnar-sided hand pain and weakness. Compression of the ulnar nerve in Guyon canal can denervate the hypothenar group, and early wasting here may be the first visible clue, distinct from median neuropathy in carpal tunnel syndrome where thenar function is targeted instead. Distal lacerations across the ulnar palm also threaten the superficial palmar arch and the ulnar digital nerve to the little finger in the same operative field. Small space, high stakes. Use this artwork for teaching hypothenar anatomy in gross anatomy, regional upper-limb courses, and hand therapy curricula, or for clarifying ulnar tunnel syndrome and hypothenar atrophy in surgical texts and patient-facing education where superficial relationships matter. It also supports procedural planning discussions for ulnar-sided incisions and tendon sheath pathology in the palm. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
