Description
Positioned from an anterior perspective, the scapula and proximal humerus frame the glenohumeral articulation, with the humeral head seated against the glenoid cavity and rimmed by the glenoid labrum. A loose, fibrous joint capsule spans from the anatomical neck of the humerus to the margin of the glenoid, creating an anterior recess that permits wide excursion before the capsule becomes taut. Superiorly, the distal clavicle and acromial region sit above the joint line, while semi-transparent ribs provide thoracic context posterior to the shoulder girdle. Articular cartilage coats the humeral head. Capsular laxity is the trade-off for mobility, and this anterior view is the one you want when teaching why the shoulder dislocates anteriorly. The anterior band of the inferior glenohumeral ligament complex and the anteroinferior capsule are the tissues stressed in abduction and external rotation, the same mechanism that drives Bankart lesions and recurrent instability after a first-time dislocation.
