Description
Centered in the lumbar column, the L2 vertebra is presented from an anterior perspective with the vertebral body dominant in the foreground and the intervertebral discs immediately superior and inferior. Adjacent vertebral bodies frame the highlighted segment, while the sacrum sits inferiorly as the column transitions toward the pelvis. From this angle, the broad anterior surface of the vertebral body and the contour of its superior and inferior endplates read clearly, with the midline aligned to the anterior longitudinal ligament attachment zone. No posterior elements distract. Anterior viewing of L2 matters when you need to teach weight transmission through the lumbar vertebrae and the endplate-disc interface, a frequent pain generator in degenerative disc disease and Schmorl node formation. The L1 to L2 and L2 to L3 levels also sit at a common junction for traumatic compression fractures, where loss of anterior vertebral body height produces wedge deformity that is easiest to conceptualize from the front. This is also the vertebral level often referenced when planning a transabdominal or anterolateral approach, where the surgeon navigates the great vessels to reach the anterior disc space for fusion or corpectomy.
