Description
Positioned at the thoracolumbar junction, the first lumbar vertebra (L1) is presented in anterior view with its broad, kidney shaped vertebral body centered in the midline and the superior and inferior endplates visible as gently concave surfaces for disc attachment. From this perspective, the vertebral arch lies posterior to the body, while the pedicles and transverse processes project posterolaterally, framing the intervertebral foramina laterally in the lumbar column. Adjacent intervertebral discs appear as pale cushions between L1 and its neighboring vertebrae, and the sacrum sits inferiorly as the fused terminal segment of the spine. Clinically, L1 is a frequent landmark for correlating surface anatomy and imaging, sitting just inferior to T12 and often near the transition from thoracic kyphosis to lumbar lordosis. Compression fractures at the thoracolumbar junction often involve L1 after axial load injuries, and the anterior vertebral body is the portion that collapses in classic wedge deformity. This anterior view also supports teaching the biomechanics of load transmission through the vertebral bodies and discs, where disc degeneration and Schmorl nodes tend to track with endplate stress.
