Description
Arising from the facial artery at the level of the nasolabial region, the lateral nasal artery courses superiorly and medially along the lateral aspect of the nose, curving around the ala toward the dorsum. From an anterior perspective, its path can be appreciated in relation to the alar cartilage and the overlying facial expression musculature, including the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi and adjacent fibers of the nasalis. Superficial veins on the face and periorbital region may be shown in parallel, while portions of the maxilla, mandible, and dentition anchor the vascular anatomy in bony context. Midline nasal structures sit medial to the vessel, with the cheek and nasolabial fold lying lateral and inferior. For clinicians working on the nose, this artery matters because it represents a predictable source of bleeding and a key contributor to cutaneous perfusion of the ala and sidewall. Rhinoplasty, alar base reduction, and excision of nasal skin cancers all intersect the same subcutaneous plane where the lateral nasal artery and its small branches run. Needle placement for dermal fillers along the alar groove or nasal sidewall also carries a known risk of intravascular injection and ischemia, given anastomoses with the dorsal nasal artery and other branches near the medial canthus.
