Description

Running along the lateral surface of the external nose, the lateral nasal vein collects blood from the alar and dorsolateral nasal tissues and descends inferiorly to join the angular vein near the medial canthus before continuing into the facial vein. From an anterior perspective, its course is read against the nasalis and levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, with the orbicularis oculi superiorly and the orbicularis oris inferiorly providing clear muscular landmarks. Superficial arterial companions, including branches of the facial artery along the nasolabial region and dorsal nasal branches near the bridge, frame the venous pathway. Superficial. Variable. Clinically real. Because the lateral nasal vein drains into the angular vein and then the facial vein, it sits within the classic facial venous connections that communicate with the superior ophthalmic vein and cavernous sinus. That relationship matters when teaching the historical “danger triangle” concept, but it also comes up in modern practice during management of nasal vestibulitis, furuncles, and midface soft-tissue infections where venous spread toward the orbit remains a concern. The same venous anatomy guides safe planes for filler injection and flap design in nasal and perinasal reconstruction, where inadvertent intravascular injection or compromise of venous outflow can have immediate consequences. Ideal for head and neck anatomy teaching in medical, dental, and PA curricula, this anterior male reference also supports ENT, plastic surgery, and dermatology publications discussing perinasal infection pathways, facial vein tributaries, or injection technique around the nose and nasolabial fold. It also fits clinical patient-education materials that need accurate surface-correlated vasculature overlying facial expression and masticatory muscles. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
