Description

Arising from the lateral aspect of the peripatellar venous plexus, the superior lateral genicular vein courses anterior to the distal femur and along the superolateral margin of the patella, remaining superficial to the joint capsule while tracking toward the lateral femoral condyle. In this anterior perspective of a male knee, adjacent landmarks would include the quadriceps tendon superior to the patella, the patellar ligament descending to the tibial tuberosity, and the lateral retinaculum blending with fascia over the vastus lateralis and iliotibial tract. Small venules converge into the named vessel, and periarticular anastomosis connects it with companion genicular veins and the arterial genicular network. Relationships are clearest where the vein runs lateral to the patellar border and superior to the tibial plateau. Venous anatomy around the knee gets ignored until it causes a problem. This view is practical for understanding why anterior incisions, arthroscopy portal placement, and lateral retinacular procedures can produce disproportionate superficial bleeding, even when major arteries are avoided, because the genicular veins form a dense anastomotic web that bridges the patellar region and the distal thigh. It also supports teaching around postoperative hematoma formation and the pathways for superficial thrombophlebitis tracking across the anterior knee toward the femoral venous system. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules when teaching periarticular vessels, in surgical technique guides discussing anterolateral knee approaches, or in radiology education to orient learners to anterior knee vascular landmarks during Doppler assessment of superficial veins.
