Arising from the popliteal arterial system, the superior lateral genicular artery courses anteriorly and laterally, then winds superior to the lateral femoral condyle beneath the distal vastus lateralis. From this anterior perspective, its tortuous segment is seen skirting the supracondylar region of the femur before contributing branches toward the peripatellar anastomosis. The patella sits anterior to the distal femur, while the tibia and fibula lie inferiorly, framing the joint line and lateral compartment. This vessel matters because it is one of the principal feeders of the lateral periarticular arterial ring of the knee, a network relied on when the superficial femoral artery is compromised and collateral flow must reroute around the joint. Its close relationship to the lateral femoral condyle and synovial capsule makes it relevant during lateral arthrotomy, total knee arthroplasty exposure, and fracture fixation near the distal femur, where inadvertent injury can contribute to hemarthrosis or delayed wound healing.
