Description
Centered on the nasal dorsum and sidewalls, the nasal vein anastomosis appears as a superficial venous plexus bridging paired venules across the midline of the external nose. Tributaries course superiorly toward the angular vein at the medial canthus and inferiorly toward the lateral nasal and superior labial veins that continue into the facial vein, all set superficial to the nasal cartilages and the mimetic muscles. Surrounding facial musculature such as orbicularis oculi, levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, and orbicularis oris provides clear landmarks, while the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius define the lateral neck boundary and frame the cervicofacial drainage pathway. Anterior mapping of these connections matters because the nasal venous network is valveless and communicates with deeper routes, including the superior ophthalmic vein, which provides a potential pathway toward the cavernous sinus via the angular vein at the medial orbital margin. This is the anatomy behind cavernous sinus thrombosis arising from infected nasal vestibule furuncles or manipulation within the so-called danger triangle, and it also explains the brisk, diffuse venous bleeding that can complicate rhinoplasty dissection or facial lacerations over the nasal sidewall. Small vessels, big consequences. Use this plate for teaching head and neck surface anatomy, otolaryngology and plastic surgery approaches to the external nose, or for illustrating venous spread of infection in emergency medicine and infectious disease publications.
