Description
Running along the dorsum of the nose in the midline, the dorsal nasal vein ascends superiorly toward the medial canthus, where it joins the angular vein at the inner corner of the orbit. From this anterior perspective in an adult male, the vein lies superficial to the nasal cartilages and adjacent facial musculature, with the surrounding periorbital veins and facial venous tributaries arranged symmetrically on either side. Color coding separates venous channels in blue from accompanying arteries in red, while exposed facial muscles in red, including periorbital fibers and nasal elevators, frame the vessel’s course. The sternocleidomastoid and platysma extend inferiorly in the neck, providing orientation to the cervical region without distracting from the nasal venous focus. Venous anatomy at the medial canthus matters because the angular vein forms a key conduit between the facial vein and the ophthalmic venous system, creating a clinically relevant route for spread of infection from the central face to the orbit and cavernous sinus. This is the classic anatomic substrate behind septic cavernous sinus thrombosis arising from nasal vestibulitis or infected lesions near the nose and upper lip. Small in caliber, but not trivial. The anterior view makes it easy to teach how a seemingly superficial dorsal nasal vein relates spatially to the orbit, eyelids, and nasal bridge, which is often hard to appreciate in cross-sectional imaging alone.
