Description

Arcing anterior to the glenohumeral joint, the anterior circumflex humeral vein tracks laterally and posteriorly around the surgical neck of the humerus, closely paired with the anterior circumflex humeral artery as it passes deep to the deltoid. Superior to the vessel loop, the clavicle and acromion form the bony roof of the shoulder girdle, while the scapular neck and glenoid lie medially. Striated fibers of pectoralis major occupy the anterior chest wall, and the deltoid and proximal humeral shaft provide the lateral frame. Small venous tributaries converge into the circumflex channel. Clear orientation. Because the vein wraps the surgical neck, this view helps you anticipate bleeding patterns when the proximal humerus fractures or when surgical exposure is required for open reduction and internal fixation, intramedullary nailing, or shoulder arthroplasty. The anterior circumflex humeral vessels run near the long head of biceps tendon in the bicipital groove region and near the quadrangular space territory posteriorly, so their course matters when planning deltopectoral approaches and when explaining postoperative hematoma or ecchymosis tracking in the upper arm. In gross anatomy teaching, the illustration supports lessons on axillary and proximal brachial venous drainage, circumflex anastomoses around the humeral neck, and the relationship of vessels to the surgical neck landmark. It also fits orthopedic and sports medicine texts discussing proximal humerus fracture fixation, deltopectoral exposure, and safe zones for retractors around the shoulder. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
