Running superficially along the anteromedial thigh, the great saphenous vein ascends from the medial side of the knee toward the femoral triangle, where it approaches the saphenous opening in the fascia lata to join the femoral vein. Tributary venules converge into the main trunk, and perforating veins course deep through the fascia to communicate with the femoral venous system. Anteriorly, the vessel lies medial to the quadriceps femoris mass and parallels the medial border of the thigh, with the femur deep to the muscular compartment and the knee joint structures visible inferiorly.
