Running in the superficial fascia along the medial side of the male lower limb, the great saphenous vein begins from the dorsal venous arch of the foot and courses anterior to the medial malleolus before ascending the anteromedial leg. Proximally it tracks along the medial knee and thigh, approaching the saphenous hiatus (fossa ovalis) in the fascia lata where it pierces to join the femoral vein just inferior to the inguinal ligament at the saphenofemoral junction. Tributaries in the upper thigh, including the superficial epigastric, superficial circumflex iliac, and superficial external pudendal veins, are logically positioned to converge near this junction, with the femoral vessels lying deeper and more lateral in the femoral triangle.
