Description

Arising from the medial foot and leg and then sweeping proximally, the great saphenous vein is traced along the posteromedial calf and medial thigh as it ascends toward the saphenous opening at the groin. From this posterior angle, the vessel sits superficial to the deep fascia, crossing the posterior-medial contour of the knee region before continuing along the medial thigh, with small cutaneous tributaries and venules feeding into it. Surrounding landmarks include gluteus maximus superiorly and the posterior thigh compartments, with biceps femoris lying laterally and semitendinosus and semimembranosus more medially; adductor magnus forms a medial deep boundary in the proximal thigh. Color coding distinguishes venous channels (blue) from arteries (red) across the posterior buttock and thigh.
