Description
Running subcutaneously along the medial border of the lower limb, the great saphenous vein ascends anterior to the medial malleolus, then tracks proximally along the medial tibia and posteromedial thigh toward the saphenofemoral junction. A prominent superficial tributary joins the main venous trunk along its course, shown in lateral profile against the contour of the leg, with the quadriceps femoris anteriorly and the hamstring mass posteriorly providing muscular landmarks. Tendinous structures around the knee and along the thigh are rendered as paler bands, helping separate superficial venous pathways from deeper musculoskeletal planes. Orientation stays consistent. Medial is toward the viewer’s far side. This side-on presentation matters because the great saphenous vein is the usual source conduit for autologous grafting in coronary artery bypass and peripheral bypass, and its caliber and tributary pattern influence harvest planning and incision placement.
