Description
Seen from the anterior aspect of the male shoulder girdle, the axillary vein ascends in the axilla medial and anterior to the axillary artery, receiving paired brachial veins and tributaries that course along the proximal humerus. Superiorly it continues beneath the clavicle to become the subclavian vein at the lateral border of the first rib, with the clavicle and upper ribs providing clear osseous landmarks. Pectoralis major forms the anterior wall of the axilla, while the deltoid caps the lateral shoulder. Blue venous channels interlace with red arterial branches as they pass between the chest and upper limb. This perspective matters because the axillary vein is the principal outflow of the upper limb and a frequent access route for central venous catheters and transvenous pacing leads, where an anterior approach must respect the vein’s proximity to the axillary artery and cords of the brachial plexus. The transition to the subclavian vein under the clavicle also explains why clavicle fractures, costoclavicular compression, or catheter malposition can precipitate upper extremity deep venous thrombosis and venous thoracic outlet syndrome. Landmarks are the point. The relationship to pectoralis minor is also clinically relevant, since the axillary vein lies anterior to it while the artery is typically described in three parts around it, a common teaching anchor. Use this plate in gross anatomy and regional anatomy courses when introducing the axilla, in nursing and anesthesia education for upper limb venous access, and in surgical or interventional radiology publications discussing axillary or subclavian central line placement and complications.
