Lateral Perspective of the Dorsal Nasal Vein

Description

Angled from the lateral aspect of the male head and neck, the dorsal nasal vein is traced along the dorsum of the nose, superficial to the nasal bones and upper lateral cartilages and continuous inferiorly with the angular vein near the medial canthus. Superiorly it communicates with the supraorbital and supratrochlear veins at the root of the nose, sitting anterior to the frontal bone and medial to the orbit. Surrounding it, the facial musculature is rendered in situ, including the procerus and nasalis over the nasal bridge, with the masseter and temporalis positioned posterolaterally as deeper landmarks for facial planes. Clinically, this vein matters because it participates in the valveless venous pathways that connect the superficial face with the orbit and cavernous sinus via the angular vein and superior ophthalmic vein. Infection from the nasal vestibule or a furuncle on the dorsum of the nose can spread retrograde, a mechanism behind septic cavernous sinus thrombosis and orbital cellulitis.
