Description

Arising over the nasal dorsum, the dorsal nasal vein is traced as a slender blue channel running superficial to the nasal bones and upper lateral cartilages, descending toward the root of the nose near the nasion. From this oblique anterolateral head-and-neck view, it lies medial to the medial canthus and anterior to the lacrimal sac region, where it commonly communicates with the angular vein at the superomedial orbit. Nearby facial muscles are rendered in relief, including the temporalis and masseter laterally and the sternocleidomastoid coursing inferiorly along the neck. Fine venules across the bridge of the nose emphasize the superficial venous plexus of the face. For clinicians, the dorsal nasal vein matters because it sits within the classic perinasal venous pathways that can connect, via the angular vein and ophthalmic veins, to the cavernous sinus. Infection spread from the nasal vestibule or dorsum, although uncommon, follows these valveless venous channels, and this view makes those potential routes easier to teach than a purely schematic diagram. A small structure. A big consequence. The same surface anatomy also guides safe injection planes for nasal filler, where inadvertent intravascular injection and retrograde flow toward the ophthalmic circulation can lead to retinal ischemia. Educators will find this image well suited for head and neck anatomy teaching on facial venous drainage, the relationship of superficial veins to the medial canthus, and clinically oriented discussions of the “danger triangle” of the face. It also supports surgical and aesthetic medicine references that need an anatomically grounded depiction of the dorsal nasal vein in a male subject, including ENT, maxillofacial, and oculoplastics contexts. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
