Description
Oriented in an anterior (palmar) perspective, the illustration isolates the superficial lymphatic plexus of the male palm draped over the palmar surfaces of the metacarpals and proximal phalanges, with the intrinsic thenar and hypothenar musculature removed to keep the lattice of lymphatic vessels readable. Fine lymphatic channels course distally toward the digital rays and converge proximally across the central palm, then continue toward the wrist where collectors would accompany superficial veins en route to the cubital fossa and axilla. Bony landmarks remain prominent, including the metacarpal shafts and heads at the metacarpophalangeal joints, providing a rigid reference for the otherwise delicate network. No muscle bellies distract. Palmar lymphatic anatomy is rarely taught with the same clarity as arteries and nerves, yet it directly informs how infection and edema spread from the hand. Superficial lymphatic vessels from the digits and palm commonly track with the basilic venous territory toward the epitrochlear and then axillary lymph nodes, a pathway implicated in ascending lymphangitis after puncture wounds, paronychia, or felon infections. This view also helps explain why dorsal hand swelling can accompany seemingly small palmar injuries: superficial channels communicate around the digital margins and across the hand, and inflammation can obstruct outflow early. Hand surgery and anatomy teaching benefit from a clean, muscle-subtracted palmar field when discussing lymphatic mapping, postoperative edema after carpal tunnel release, or planning incision placement to reduce lymphatic disruption.
