Description
Centered in the upper abdomen, the pancreas is highlighted in anterior view as an elongated gland coursing transversely from the C-loop of the duodenum on the patient’s right toward the splenic hilum on the left. The head sits medial to the second part of the duodenum, with the neck crossing anterior to the portal venous confluence, and the body and tail extending leftward, posterior to the stomach and inferior to the liver. A main pancreatic duct can be inferred running longitudinally toward the major duodenal papilla. Subcutaneous and visceral adipose are implied by the obese male habitus. Anterior orientation matters because the pancreas is retroperitoneal for most of its length, and in obesity its borders can be less distinct on physical exam and even cross sectional imaging, while peripancreatic fat planes may alter how inflammation spreads. Acute pancreatitis often tracks along the anterior pararenal space and mesenteric root, and gallstone disease affects the head region where the common bile duct courses in close proximity before entering the duodenum. For surgeons, this relationship underpins exposure during pancreaticoduodenectomy and helps explain why tumors of the head commonly present with painless obstructive jaundice, whereas lesions in the tail can remain silent until late. In teaching, this artwork supports gross anatomy and GI block instruction on retroperitoneal organs, the hepatopancreatic ampulla, and the endocrine role of islet insulin within the pancreatic parenchyma.
