Description

Frontal bone anatomy dominates this anterior view, with attention drawn to the superior parietal margin where the squamous part of the frontal bone meets the paired parietal bones at the coronal suture. The serrated, interdigitating edge is seen along the superolateral contour of the frontal bone, running transversely across the cranial vault from right to left. Superior to the orbital region and anterior to the parietal bones, this margin forms the anterior boundary of the parietal area and frames the transition from frontal to parietal calvaria. Sutural complexity is the point. Coronal suture morphology matters in both normal development and pathology: premature fusion (coronal craniosynostosis), whether unilateral or bilateral, alters frontal and orbital growth patterns and drives characteristic anterior plagiocephaly or brachycephaly, with secondary asymmetry of the supraorbital rim. In adult cranial trauma, fracture lines often propagate toward sutures and may arrest or deflect at the interlocking coronal interface, which is useful when teaching fracture pattern recognition and when explaining why diastasis can occur in high-energy injury. For craniofacial and neurosurgical planning, the coronal suture is also a surface landmark when mapping frontal craniotomy placement and when discussing the relationship of the bregma region to the superior sagittal sinus trajectory and underlying dura, even though intracranial contents are not included in this frame. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and osteology modules, craniosynostosis teaching files, and medical publishing layouts that need a precise anterior reference for the frontal bone-parietal junction and coronal suture. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
