Description
Arising from the lumbar vertebral bodies and transverse processes, psoas major descends on the posterior abdominal wall, running inferiorly and slightly laterally toward the pelvis where it approaches the iliacus in the iliac fossa. From an anterior perspective, the paired muscles frame the lumbar spine medially and track toward the lesser trochanter region as a shared iliopsoas tendon, with the iliacus occupying the concavity of the ilium lateral to psoas. Ribs and the bony pelvis anchor orientation, while adjacent abdominal wall and pelvic muscles remain in grayscale to keep attention on the hip flexor complex. Bilateral symmetry is easy to compare. For teaching and clinical reference, this angle clarifies how the iliopsoas bridges trunk to femur and why anterior hip pain can originate proximal to the joint itself.
