Description
Arising from the lateral surfaces of the lumbar vertebral bodies and transverse processes, the psoas major is shown bilaterally as a deep, fusiform column descending inferiorly along the posterior abdominal wall. Each muscle passes anterior to the hip joint, crosses the pelvic brim, and converges with the iliacus on the internal surface of the ilium to form the iliopsoas tendon inserting on the lesser trochanter of the femur. Superficial to this deep layer, rectus abdominis occupies the anterior midline, the external oblique forms the lateral abdominal wall, and the proximal quadriceps define the anterior thigh. Lumbar vertebrae sit superior and medial to the pelvic ring. Hip flexion starts here. This anterior full-body perspective clarifies how psoas major links the lumbar spine to the femur, a relationship that explains its dual roles in hip flexion and in influencing lumbar lordosis during gait and prolonged sitting.
