Description
Arising from the inferior mesenteric artery in the left lower abdomen, the sigmoid arteries course anteroinferiorly within the sigmoid mesocolon and arc toward the sigmoid colon before continuing into marginal arterial channels along the antimesenteric border. The anterior perspective keeps the haustrated contour of the descending colon, sigmoid colon, and proximal rectum in view, with teniae coli and appendices epiploicae marking the colonic surface. Branching vessels can be followed distally as they form anastomoses with adjacent colic branches. Clear vascular geometry. Understanding this distribution matters when you are teaching hindgut perfusion and watershed zones, because the sigmoid segment sits near variable anastomoses between inferior mesenteric branches and the superior rectal artery, and perfusion can be tenuous after ligation. Surgeons planning a low anterior resection or sigmoid colectomy routinely consider the relationship of the sigmoid arteries to the mesenteric window and the marginal artery, aiming to preserve adequate inflow to the rectosigmoid while maintaining an oncologic high tie when indicated. This view supports those decisions. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and GI surgery teaching to map inferior mesenteric branching patterns onto recognizable surface landmarks such as haustra and teniae coli, and in textbooks or slide decks covering diverticular disease, ischemic colitis of the rectosigmoid region, or colorectal anastomotic healing. It also fits radiology and endovascular education when correlating mesenteric angiography with segmental colonic perfusion territories. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
