Description
Positioned at the superior aspect of the uterine corpus, a fundal uterine fibroid (leiomyoma, myoma) projects from the myometrium at the fundus, altering the normally smooth convex contour. The endometrial cavity lies centrally and inferior to the fundus, tapering toward the isthmus and cervix, while the cervix continues inferiorly toward the vaginal canal. Laterally, the uterine cornua give rise to the fallopian tubes, which course toward the ovaries on each side; the adnexa frame the uterus in a symmetric arrangement. Fundal fibroids matter because they can distort the uterine cavity or expand the serosal surface in ways that change bleeding patterns, fertility, and procedural planning. A submucosal component at the fundus often correlates with heavy menstrual bleeding and reduced implantation rates, while a subserosal or intramural fundal mass can contribute to bulk symptoms and complicate access during hysteroscopic resection or laparoscopic myomectomy.
