Description
Originating from the styloid process of the temporal bone, the stylohyoid muscle descends anteroinferiorly along the upper neck toward the suprahyoid region, running superficial and slightly lateral to the hyoid apparatus. From an inferior perspective you would expect to appreciate its distal fibers approaching the hyoid bone near the junction of the body and greater cornu, where the insertion sits just superior to the level of the thyrohyoid membrane. Medially, the muscle’s course relates to the floor of the mouth musculature, while laterally it tracks toward the parotid and upper carotid region, where the styloid complex organizes several closely packed neurovascular corridors. This angle matters because the stylohyoid is a consistent landmark for understanding suprahyoid mechanics during swallowing, and it frames the pathway of structures that can be irritated or displaced in stylohyoid complex disorders. An elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament, classically discussed in Eagle syndrome, can produce cervicofacial pain and dysphagia and may be approached surgically with careful respect for the facial nerve, glossopharyngeal nerve, and adjacent carotid vessels.
