Description
Arising from the styloid process of the temporal bone, the stylohyoid muscle runs anteroinferiorly toward the hyoid and lies immediately superior and parallel to the posterior belly of the digastric. In this lateral head and neck view, the stylohyoid is positioned medial to the mandibular ramus and just anterior to the mastoid region, with the hyoid sitting inferior to the mandible at the level of the upper cervical spine. The muscle’s distal fibers approach the junction of the body and greater horn of the hyoid, where it typically splits to allow the intermediate tendon of the digastric to pass. Small but instructive anatomy. This relationship matters because the stylohyoid and posterior digastric form part of the suprahyoid sling that elevates the hyoid during swallowing, and their course frames common operative corridors in the submandibular and parapharyngeal regions. A lateral depiction also helps when teaching stylohyoid syndrome (Eagle syndrome), where an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament can produce cervicofacial pain, dysphagia, or foreign body sensation, often mistaken for temporomandibular or dental pathology.
