Description
Beneath the superficial cervical fascia, the stylohyoid is traced as a slender suprahyoid muscle running anteroinferiorly from the styloid process of the temporal bone to the body of the hyoid at the junction with the greater horn. The mandibular ramus with dentition, adjacent facial bones, and the upper cervical vertebrae provide bony orientation, while nearby muscles of mastication such as the masseter and temporalis frame the lateral skull. Inferiorly, the hyoid sits superior to the thyroid cartilage, with the upper airway and proximal trachea descending in the midline. Its relationship to the stylohyoid complex is legible. Functionally, the stylohyoid elevates and retracts the hyoid during the pharyngeal phase of swallowing and it travels with the posterior belly of the digastric, a pairing that helps teach suprahyoid coordination. Clinically, its course is a useful reference when discussing Eagle syndrome, where elongation of the styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament can produce throat pain, dysphagia, referred otalgia, and a foreign body sensation that clinicians often localize to the tonsillar fossa. Spatial context with the hyoid, laryngeal cartilages, and upper cervical skeleton makes it easier to explain why symptoms can be provoked by head rotation or swallowing.
