Description
Arising from the inferior mental spine (genial tubercle) on the inner surface of the mandibular symphysis, the paired geniohyoid muscles course posteriorly and inferiorly to insert on the anterior surface of the body of the hyoid bone. They lie superior (deep) to the mylohyoid, hugging the midline in the floor of mouth, and sit just inferior to the tongue musculature while remaining anterior to the suprahyoid sling. Surrounding context in the jaw and hyoid region logically includes the mandible with dentition, adjacent muscles of mastication such as the masseter and medial pterygoid, and portions of the cervical spine inferiorly. Understanding geniohyoid morphology matters because it links mandibular position to hyoid excursion during the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing. Contraction draws the hyoid anterosuperiorly and can assist in mandible depression when the hyoid is fixed, a relationship that becomes clinically relevant in dysphagia assessment and in sleep-disordered breathing where suprahyoid tone contributes to airway patency. It is also a practical landmark when teaching floor-of-mouth anatomy, because its location directly superior to the mylohyoid helps learners orient the deep plane of the suprahyoid region.
