Description
Running along the midline of the suprahyoid region, the geniohyoid appears as a paired, strap-like muscle extending from the inferior mental spine (genial tubercle) of the mandible to the anterior surface of the hyoid body. In sagittal section it sits superior to the mylohyoid at the floor of the mouth, with the genioglossus immediately superior and posterior as the tongue base rises toward the oropharynx. Anteriorly the mandibular symphysis and alveolar process frame the oral cavity, while posteriorly the pharyngeal airway relates to the epiglottic region and laryngeal inlet; inferiorly, the hyoid anchors the suprahyoid complex above the cervical vertebrae. Close relationships are clear. This slice matters because the geniohyoid links mandibular position to hyoid excursion, a key mechanic in the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing and in stabilizing the airway during tongue movement. Clinically, reduced suprahyoid recruitment contributes to impaired anterior hyoid displacement in dysphagia, and the midline attachments at the genial tubercles are relevant landmarks during submental approaches and floor-of-mouth surgery. The sagittal perspective also clarifies why edema, hematoma, or infection in the sublingual and submental spaces can threaten the airway by elevating the tongue and narrowing the oropharyngeal lumen.
