Description
Viewed from an inferior approach into the oral cavity, the sublingual gland lies in the anterior floor of the mouth, immediately superior to the mylohyoid and lateral to the genioglossus. Its elongated body parallels the sublingual fold along the lingual aspect of the mandible, with multiple small sublingual ducts (ducts of Rivinus) opening directly into the oral mucosa. Medially, the frenulum linguae and ventral surface of the tongue provide midline orientation, while posteriorly the gland relates to the deep part of the submandibular gland and the course of the submandibular duct (Wharton duct) toward the sublingual caruncle. Small openings matter. This inferior perspective is the one you want when teaching why sublingual secretions often drain through many minor duct orifices rather than a single dominant duct, and how that anatomy shapes pathology. Ranulas arise from mucus extravasation in the sublingual gland and present as a bluish, fluctuant swelling in the floor of mouth, classically lateral; this view clarifies the typical site and why simple ductal obstruction behaves differently here than in the submandibular gland. Surgeons working transorally also track the close relationship of the sublingual gland to the lingual nerve and submandibular duct when excising a ranula or removing the gland.
