Description
Viewed from an inferior aspect, the maxillary lateral incisor is presented with a transparent rendering that allows the crown and single root to be read as a continuous unit. Lingual anatomy dominates this perspective, with the cingulum positioned cervically and the mesial and distal marginal ridges framing the lingual fossa; a lingual pit or subtle palatogingival (linguogingival) groove may be appreciable near the cingulum. Mesially the tooth relates to the maxillary central incisor, while distally it approaches the maxillary canine, and the root projects superiorly into the alveolar process of the maxilla even if the surrounding bone is only implied. That lingual pit matters. It is a predictable plaque-retentive site on the palatal surface and a common origin point for caries that can undermine the marginal ridges before it becomes obvious on a casual clinical exam. When a pronounced palatogingival groove extends onto the root, it becomes a well-known pathway for combined endodontic periodontal lesions, influencing decisions around sealant placement, restorative access, and prognosis during endodontic therapy of a lateral incisor with a deep, narrow periodontal defect.
