The contour transitions anteriorly toward the articular eminence (tubercle), while the posterior margin approaches the postglenoid process where the fossa narrows and deepens. Across the sequence, subtle rotations maintain an inferior baseline while changing obliquity so the viewer can track the fossa’s long axis and its relationship to adjacent temporal bone landmarks. Bony topography drives the reading. That anatomy matters because the mandibular fossa and articular eminence define the osseous constraints of the temporomandibular joint, guiding the mandibular condyle during rotation and anterior translation.
