Description
Articular tubercle of the temporal bone forms a convex eminence at the anterior margin of the mandibular fossa, immediately anterior to the external acoustic meatus and inferior to the squamous part of the temporal bone. From a lateral skull perspective, the tubercle sits anteromedial to the root of the zygomatic process, with the mandibular (glenoid) fossa recessed posteriorly and slightly inferiorly as the seating surface for the mandibular condyle. The temporal component of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the focus. Bony contours dominate the frame. Clinically, the slope of the articular tubercle guides anterior translation of the mandibular condyle during wide opening and protrusion, and its morphology influences joint loading patterns in internal derangement. A steep eminence is a familiar association in discussions of disc displacement with reduction, while flattening and osteophyte formation along the eminence and fossa are common CT findings in TMJ osteoarthritis. By isolating the osseous landmarks that bracket the joint, this illustration supports precise teaching of what is meant by “eminence” versus “fossa,” and where the fibrocartilaginous articular surfaces are expected to lie on the temporal bone. Maxillofacial surgeons and dentists can place this illustration into TMJ arthroscopy lectures, preoperative counseling graphics for eminectomy or eminoplasty, or atlases that compare normal anatomy with degenerative remodeling around the mandibular fossa.
