Description
Arising from the anterior root of the zygomatic process, the articular tubercle (articular eminence) of the temporal bone projects anterior to the mandibular fossa and superior to the neck of the mandible, forming a bony ramp that the mandibular condyle traverses during opening. As the sequence progresses, the camera tracks along the temporal component of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), clarifying how the tubercle’s convex contour stands anterior to the glenoid (mandibular) fossa and lateral to the cranial base. Spatial context within the skull is maintained, with the zygomatic arch extending laterally from the squamous temporal bone while the articular surface transitions from the fossa posteriorly to the eminence anteriorly. Functionally, this region defines the path of condylar translation in normal mastication and speech, and it is the osseous landmark most clinicians palpate indirectly when evaluating anterior disc displacement and hypermobility. The animated progression makes the biomechanics legible: rotation begins in the inferior joint space, then anterior translation carries the condyle toward and onto the articular tubercle, the motion that becomes exaggerated in subluxation and dislocation when the condyle rides too far anterior. That stepwise relationship between fossa, tubercle, and condyle is hard to teach from a single frame.
