Description

Rotating into an inferior view of the cranial base, the temporal bone is centered on the mandibular fossa (fossa mandibularis), the smooth concavity that accepts the mandibular condyle at the temporomandibular joint. Anterior to the fossa, the articular tubercle (tuberculum articulare) rises as a transverse eminence, while the posterior limit transitions toward the tympanic part of the temporal bone adjacent to the external acoustic meatus. Medially, the fossa approaches the petrotympanic (Glaserian) fissure, and laterally it continues into the zygomatic process. Orientation stays consistent as the animation subtly shifts perspective to emphasize depth, rim contours, and the relationship between the fossa and its anterior bony restraint. For TMJ mechanics, this topography matters. The articular tubercle defines the anterior boundary for condylar translation during mouth opening, and its slope influences the path taken by the fibrocartilaginous articular disc and mandibular condyle in anterior disc displacement and reduction. Seeing the fossa from below also clarifies why fractures at the condylar neck or iatrogenic over-translation during intubation can stress the capsule and retrodiscal tissues, and how the nearby petrotympanic fissure relates to otologic symptoms sometimes reported in TMJ disorders. Bone shapes drive symptoms. Use this animation in dental anatomy and occlusion teaching, gross anatomy modules on the skull base, radiology correlation for CBCT and CT of the temporomandibular joint, or surgical education around arthrocentesis and arthroscopy landmarks where inferior bony contours and anterior eminence height matter. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
