Description
Anterior to the external acoustic meatus, the zygomatic process of the temporal bone projects forward and carries the articular eminence (articular tubercle) as a smooth, rounded ridge on its inferior aspect. From a lateral skull orientation, the eminence sits just anterior to the mandibular fossa, with the root of the zygomatic arch continuing anterolaterally toward the zygomatic bone. The animation holds this lateral perspective while subtly shifting lighting and depth cues to separate the convex articular surface from adjacent temporal squama and the shadowed concavity of the glenoid region. Bony landmarks stay fixed in anatomical position for easy spatial parsing. That relationship matters in temporomandibular joint mechanics: the mandibular condyle translates anteriorly to ride onto the articular eminence during mouth opening, and excessive translation can contribute to anterior disc displacement or condylar subluxation. Small changes in contour, such as a steep eminence or irregularity from osteoarthrosis, influence joint loading and the path of condylar movement.
