Description
Presented as an overall habitus view, the tardigrade (water bear) appears with a plump, annulated trunk and a flexible cuticle that forms shallow transverse folds along the body wall. Four pairs of short lobopod limbs project ventrolaterally from the trunk, each terminating distally in paired claws that curve like grappling hooks for traction and anchoring. Anteriorly, a small circular oral opening sits at the cephalic end, oriented forward along the long axis of the animal. For teaching microinvertebrate anatomy, this external morphology matters because the limb count and claw configuration are primary characters used to separate major tardigrade groups (for example, variations in claw symmetry and branching between eutardigrades and heterotardigrades).
