Description
Profiled in high magnification, the tardigrade’s rounded anterior head region transitions into a plump, annulated trunk with a coarse cuticular texture. At the most anterior margin, the mouth opening leads into a retractable buccal apparatus (buccal tube and associated stylets) that can be inferred from the emphasis on the feeding apparatus. Four pairs of short, lobopodous legs project ventrolaterally from the trunk segments, each terminating distally in curved claws that anchor the animal to substrate during locomotion and feeding. Attention to the buccopharyngeal apparatus matters because it is the primary taxonomic and functional landmark in tardigrades, and it is also the structure most commonly discussed in microscopy-based identifications alongside claw morphology.
