Description
Dominating the composition, the ascending aorta emerges from the left ventricle at the aortic root, then sweeps superiorly and leftward into the aortic arch before continuing as the descending thoracic aorta. From the convex superior aspect of the arch, the typical great vessels arise in sequence, the brachiocephalic trunk coursing to the right, the left common carotid ascending medial to the left, and the left subclavian traveling laterally toward the upper limb. The heart is rendered semi-transparent, so the coronary arteries and cardiac veins trace over the anterior surface of the ventricles while the superior vena cava enters the right atrium superiorly and the inferior vena cava approaches from below. Color emphasis along the aorta draws attention to the central arterial trunk. Aorta-centric views like this are a workhorse for teaching hemodynamics and for orienting readers to where catheter and guidewire travel begins in transfemoral or transradial access.
