Description
Running from the aortic root to the aortic bifurcation, the aorta is presented as a continuous arterial trunk with its ascending aorta giving way to the aortic arch, then the descending thoracic aorta and abdominal aorta. Branch points are indicated along its length, with the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery arising superiorly from the arch, and the celiac trunk, superior mesenteric artery, renal arteries, and inferior mesenteric artery arising anteriorly from the abdominal segment. Laterally and posteriorly, the parietal branches such as the posterior intercostal arteries and lumbar arteries are positioned relative to the vertebral column. Visceral branches course toward the foregut, midgut, hindgut, and kidneys.
